The Generals
What generals were in command during this battle? How many soldiers did each side have going into this battle?
-In The Battle of Antietam, there was a total of 8 generals, and an even amount on each side. For the Union, there were 4 generals, and for the Confederates, there were 4 generals as well. The names of the generals on the Union side were: Joseph K.F Manfield, Israel B. Richardson, Isaac P. Rodman, and Robert E. Lee. The names of the generals on the Confederate side were: George B. Anderson, Lawrence O'Brian Branch, William E. Starke, and George McCllelan. In the battle, all of the generals on both sides except for Lee and McCllelan had passed away. Manfield died a day after he was shot in the chest, Richardson died on November 3rd of 1862 when he was trying to bring up more artillery and got shot, and Rodman died after he was mortally wounded on September of 1862, at the age of 40. Anderson died after he got shot in the foot and spent a few days being treated, Branch died after he was shot , and Stark died after being wounded 3 TIMES, and he ended up being buried right next to his son who died 2 months before him.

-It is said that on the Union side there were 60,000 soldiers, or possibly a little bit less, and on the Confederate side, there were 87,000 soldiers. Needless to say, the Union was TOTALLY outnumbered by the Confederate army.

Three interesting facts about the battle are:
- General McCllelan was not a good leader for this battle. The main factor, was him giving isolated orders to each of the units in his army, resulting in a lot of chaos.
- The battle began at 5:30 AM at Dawn, and ended the same day at 5:30 P.M.
- There were 36 casualties a minute for twelve hours.

After the battle, there were 12,401 casualties and there were 2,108 soldiers that died on the Union Side. As for the Confederate Army, there were 10,318 soldiers wounded and 1,546 soldiers that died.. So altogether (From both sides) there were 3,654 soldiers that died, and overall 22,719 soldiers that were wounded.

The Significance of This Battle
Why was this battle so important to the Civil War?
This battle was so significant to the civil war because it provided a turning point in the whole war, being that it was a big victory for the Union and ended Robert E. Lee's "strategic campaign". Secondly, it is what helped motivate President Abraham Lincoln to release the "Emancipation Proclamation because he wanted to release it after a Union Victory had occurred. President Lincoln didn't want to release the Proclamation beforehand. He didn't want his Proclamation to seem like an act of desperation.
